How Personal Loan Repayments Are Calculated Under the NCA
In South Africa, your monthly personal loan instalment consists of more than just principal and nominal interest. Under the National Credit Act, lenders may charge a once-off initiation fee (which can either be paid upfront or capitalised into the loan balance) and a recurring monthly service fee capped at R69 (including 15% VAT).
When comparing loan terms between 12 and 72 months, notice how extending the term lowers your monthly repayment but significantly increases the cumulative interest and the number of R69 monthly service fees paid over the life of the agreement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the NCA initiation fee calculated?
For unsecured credit transactions, the National Credit Act caps the initiation fee at R165 plus 10% of the loan amount above R1,000, up to a statutory maximum of R1,050 excluding VAT (R1,207.50 including 15% VAT), and never more than 15% of the principal debt.
Why is the APR higher than the nominal interest rate?
The Annual Percentage Rate (APR) reflects the true annualised cost of borrowing by combining the nominal interest rate with mandatory initiation fees and monthly service fees.
