Understanding NCA Loan Fees and Interest Rate Caps in South Africa
South Africa’s National Credit Act (NCA) strictly limits what credit providers can charge on unsecured personal loans. Here is how maximum interest rates, initiation fees, monthly service fees, and credit life insurance are calculated.
1. Maximum Interest Rate on Unsecured Personal Loans
Under the National Credit Regulations, the maximum nominal interest rate for an unsecured credit transaction is directly linked to the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) repurchase rate (repo rate) according to the formula: Repo Rate + 21% per annum.
Lenders price your personal loan between their prime-linked minimum rate and this statutory ceiling based on your credit bureau score and affordability profile.
2. Once-Off Initiation Fee Cap
Credit providers may charge a once-off initiation fee to cover the administrative cost of originating the credit agreement. For unsecured personal loans, the statutory maximum is R165 plus 10% of the loan amount above R1,000, capped at R1,050 excluding VAT (R1,207.50 including 15% VAT), and may never exceed 15% of the principal debt.
You have the right to pay the initiation fee upfront in cash so that you do not pay interest on it over the life of the loan.
3. Monthly Service Fee & Credit Life Insurance
The maximum monthly service fee permitted by the NCA is R60 excluding VAT (R69.00 including 15% VAT) per month. In addition, mandatory credit life insurance on unsecured loans is capped at R4.50 per R1,000 of the deferred balance per month.
Frequently Asked Questions
